1st Grade Program

Lesson 1: Students learn the basic parts of plants and functions these parts perform to help the plant survive. They build a model of a plant out of one of their classmates and then dissect a real plant during this lesson.

Lesson 2: Students learn what plants need from their environment and what dangers they must avoid to survive. This lesson includes a lab activity in which students learn to recognize the parts of plants that they eat.

Lesson 3: Students learn about some of the common strategies plants use to protect themselves from drought, competition, and herbivory. They look at examples of invasive weeds that use these strategies to out-compete native plants and consider how this impacts the environment.
